Bespoke Residential Architecture

Cutler Architecture are a first class architectural practice. Work has just begun on an extension to my listed house in a village conservation area and I have been so grateful to Richard for his considered and sensitive design for this, reflecting the proportions and style of the original cottage, which enabled the plans to be passed without problem by the planning and conservation office. He and his team have been extremely helpful throughout the process, advising, suggesting and liaising on my behalf with the local authority over the many unexpected side issues that have been raised, like bats, sewers and trees. Everything has been executed professionally and speedily and they have just been excellent at keeping me informed and reassured at all times. They are a great team offering a great service - I am so pleased that I chose them and would strongly recommend them.

Throughout history, the relationship between architect and client has always been fraught with problems - clashes of ideas or unrealistic expectations (on both sides) being prominent, but also differences of view as to whom is in charge. We did not experience any such problems with Cutler Architecture. We knew the kind of thing we wanted but we lacked the skills and ideas to translate them into a reality. Cutler Architecture absorbed our ideas and came back with solutions, but they were not inflexible if we didn't like one detail or another. They were also good at another aspect of an architect, which is to manage liaison with the builder. In fact our only real complaint was that they do get busy because clients obviously like them.

Richard helped to select the right builder to run the project. He managed and controlled the project well, worked well with the building team, performed regular site visits, gave sound advice and carried out thorough checks that all the work had been performed to a high standard. All problems and extras were dealt with in an efficient and professional way. Richard's advice always took into account the Edwardian age of our home and our wish to preserve its character. An excellent service that I will use again.

We selected Richard to design and build our family home, with the practices clear passion for Arts and Crafts, I believe this passion has given us a unique home. The whole experience start to finish has been a masterclass, Richard expertly guided us through the design process and oversaw the build itself to ensure his vision was executed! Visitors to the house are always surprised this is a new build. And ten years on, there are parts of the house that still take our breath away and other parts that “work” really hard.
